ROMANE 2020 gets noticed!

ROMANE 2020 takes its first steps into the world under great applause. During the past months its tasting has provoked appreciative nods and intrigued smiles from prominent Bordeaux wine specialists. Among them, two members of the exclusive GlobalWineScore rating committee (which gathers the 20 most influential Bordeaux wine critics in the world), a world’s best sommelier, and other fine palates honored us by tasting our white wine.

Influential American critic James Suckling praises a « smoky character » (most familiar for Loire Valley wines), where citrus come jingling in: « hay, dried pineapple, burnt lemon, sage and dried spice ».

Last May, Norwegian tasting star Christer Byklum, with 20 years of experience in the Bordeaux terroirs, awarded ROMANE 2020 an 86-88/100. This range designates, in his rigorous evaluation system, « a very good wine with some outstanding features ». A few months later, Swiss author and critic Yves Beck praised it as « a wine with character that whets the appetite… and the thirst! » and awarded it a very nice score of 90.

In the preamble to his Best Primeurs review, Yves Beck underlines that 2020 is « an identity vintage, good to exceptional, marked by power and balance ». ROMANE 2020 is exactly that, and as such, a pleasant surprise. Behind its bright and pale straw yellow, our white wine combines freshness and intensity. The word « intense » comes up most often in the tasting notes.

Influential American critic James Suckling praises a « smoky character » (most familiar for Loire Valley wines), where citrus comes jingling in: « hay, dried pineapple, burnt lemon, sage and dried spice ». For the former editor of the famous Wine Spectator, ROMANE’s right balance of organoleptic properties deserves a 91! Yves Beck evokes « notes of flint », then « notes of lime » that announce freshness in the mouth.

German Markus Del Monego (1998 Best Sommelier of the World) also salutes a complex aromatic bouquet: « spicy nose with aroma reminiscent of laurel and basil, lemon zest and juicy grapefruit », and even « hints of apricots in the background ». He gives ROMANE 2020 an 88 out of 100, for its « discreet fruit, good mouthfeel and length ».

On the palate, intensity and freshness round out and match each other. « Fresh acidity, apples, pears, fruit driven if leaner » analyzes Byklum, while Suckling speaks of the « vibrant acidity and a phenolic, concentrated palate » expressed by the complex structure of ROMANE 2020. Yves Beck agrees, and is pleased that its « refreshing and invigorating tension in the mouth » suits the taste of consumers who are tired of over oaked white wines.

Expert tasters agree that ROMANE 2020 should be consumed in the next two or three years, preferably with salads and fish. These complimentary reviews encourage us to make further progress in the path we have chosen at Château de Birazel.
