Château de Birazel pursues its ecological vision

We are aware of the impact of agricultural and winemaking activities on the ecosystem. We are determined to be among the pioneers of the ecological transition. This is why we are aiming for the most demanding certification in terms of eco-responsible practices: the HVE3 label.

Château de Birazel was assessed on its use of phytosanitary products, its fertilisation practices, and its protection of biodiversity.

The certification system implemented in the aftermath of the Grenelle Environment Forum is both incentive-based and progressive. The High Environmental Value (HVE) is divided into three progressive levels of requirement. It is sufficient to comply with the environmental regulations in force to display the HVE1 label. The HVE2 label is only awarded to those that equip themselves with the resources to support their ecological transition. As for the HVE3 certification, which we seek to obtain, it is based on achieving results on a given set of criteria.

Château de Birazel was assessed on its use of phytosanitary products, its fertilisation practices, and its protection of biodiversity. We obtained an average of 13/20 for these three areas of intervention. This is an honourable score that confirms the relevance of our decisions and encourages us to go further.

The auditors awarded good grades to our replacement of chemical weeding by mechanical weeding. In the vineyard we employ natural fertilisers and promote the presence of inter-row grass. The water we use to treat the vines is processed to reduce our consumption of phytosanitary products by 30%. We also reduced our water consumption thanks to our rainwater recovery, filtering, and recycling system.

Protecting biodiversity means protecting our vines in a natural way. It is for this reason that we have planted ecological hedges, created flowering fallows, and installed quickly occupied beehives around the vines close to the protected Marquelot stream. Château de Birazel is determined to claim the HVE3 level, and aims to be an official participant in this virtuous movement soon.
